Altered Shimmer Sheetz Checkbook or Notebook Covers

This is one of the easiest projects ever! There are two ways to make the
inserts that go into the clear checkbook or notebook cover. One version has
separate front and back inserts. The other has a single insert that folds at
the center (this one can be more challenging to put into the clear cover -
like getting into skinny jeans - but it has a more finished look at the
spine).
1. HOW TO ALTER SHIMMER SHEETZ
Use any inks, paints, or markers formulated for non-porous surfaces to alter
the Shimmer Sheetz. Be sure to leave some of the Shimmer Sheetz unaltered so
the original color and sparkle stay visible.
Some excellent options include - Tim Holtz's Alcohol Inks, Metallic Mixatives
and Blending Solution (Ranger), Pinata Color (Jacquard), Silks iridescent
acrylic glaze (LuminArte), StazOn (Tsukineko).
*Create random or controlled patterns
*For inks, use a felt applicator to dab on color or pour straight from the
bottle
*For paints, use a brush or a foam dauber
*Choose whatever color combination pleases your eye
*Use embossing folders before or after altering the Shimmer Sheetz for
dimensional texture
*Lightly sand some of the surface (before or after altering, before or after
embossing) if you want to tone down the shine
*For sanded pieces, use a damp towel to remove the dust, same as if you were
sanding wood
*Allow the altered Shimmer Sheetz to dry before making the covers or epoxy
circle embellishments
*Tip: In addition to making your own low-relief embellishments, you can use
gems, peel-offs, flat charms, and such
2. MAKING LOW-RELIEF EMBELLISHMENTS
Place adhesive-backed epoxy circles (or other shapes) onto altered Shimmer
Sheetz. Carefully cut around the circles. Adhere the embellishments with Be
Creative Tape or any good quality double-stick adhesive tape. Save the scraps
for other projects (even the tiniest pieces of Shimmer Sheetz can be punched
for sequins or cut into mosaics).
3. CREATE THE COVERS
Version I - SUPER EASY:
a.
Shimmer Sheetz Only -
Cut and alter two 3" x 6" pieces of Shimmer Sheetz, add low-relief
embellishments to the front cover piece. Insert into front and back pockets of
the clear cover.
b,
Shimmer Sheetz Collage -
If you are making a collage instead of using a single piece of Shimmer Sheetz,
cut two 3" x 6" pieces of medium-weight cardstock and cover with Shimmer
Sheetz collage. Trim at edges as needed. Add low-relief embellishments to the
front cover and insert into front and back pockets of the clear cover.
Version II - A BIT MORE CHALLENGING:
Cut a piece of cardstock to 6" x 6.5," score, and fold in half (folded size,
6" across and 3.25" high with fold across the top). Open the cardstock so you
can work on it while flat. Adhere altered Shimmer Sheetz pieces to cover the
cardstock. Score and fold a second time once the collage is finished. Make
sure the area near the fold is only one layer of Shimmer Sheetz. TIP: Cover
Shimmer Sheetz side of the collage with a kitchen towel so you won't scratch
the college and burnish well for a crisp fold. Add low-relief embellishments
to the front cover. Bend back so the insert is nearly inside out and carefully
work the piece into the front and back pockets of the clear cover. If it's too
tight a fit, trim the edges a tiny bit and try again. Note: This cover will
never be totally flat like Version I.
4. COVER A NOTEBOOK
Instead of using the cover for a checkbook, make or buy a small notebook and
place it inside the decorated cover!
